We all know they are meaningless, but there is a dangerous part of the brain that wants to collect them. Whether they are Steam achievements or MMO mounts, or any badges, titles, and gubbins games distributed to keep you engaged, this weekend we are going to ask: What achievements have you put in a ridiculous effort?
Joanna Nelius: I’m trying to get the Go Outside achievement in The Stanley Parable. If you don’t play games for five years, you will get this achievement. I deliberately avoided playing the game in order to get it, but in four years or so I had completely forgotten about this achievement, and in the excitement of introducing the game to some friends, I activated it. I am now back to the third month of five years. nonsense.
Jody McGregor: Divine Realm: As a half-dragon, the commander of the dragon has become the emperor with a jetpack. You have made great achievements in all kinds of political decisions. Many of these achievements are related to the tasks provided by the princess you married, which is why I took turns to marry them. Obviously, the dragon’s spouse did not divorce, but after completing their side missions, I had to sacrifice them one by one to a demon named Corvus. I think I can replay Divine Realm: Commander Dragon, but it’s not very good. I decided to get as many achievements as possible, including the one that let my dwarf wife feed her dad to the pig. What a game.
Andy Kelly: I like this game, but man, it has some of the worst achievements ever. I’m sure The Chinese Room didn’t want to include any content, but when the game was a PS4 exclusive game, Sony was forced to join, and their crappy behavior was a protest from the developers. In any case, there is something called Moonwalker, you have to walk backward 50 seconds. That’s it. I don’t know why, but I went to pick it up deliberately and wandered around the moon in the center of Yaughton until it popped up. I also stood motionless in the phone booth for three minutes to get the achievement of the wrong number. Absolutely meaningless, probably the most casual achievement in the history of video games.
Jarred Walton: Any game where I collect 100% of everything you can find is ridiculous in retrospect. There is usually no good reason to be fascinated by these things, which is a large part of the reason why I avoid MMOs-if I let them hook, they will get stuck in it. I want to make sure that I don¡¯t miss certain parts of the story, but inevitably, a few lines of text or anything that is not worth the effort.
I collected all the games that I immediately thought of: the original Assassin¡¯s Creed, Batman Arkham Asylum, and recently I have been exploring the journey of the savage planet. There is an interesting side note: the original Assassin’s Creed was the only game in the series that I really completed, and I suspect all wasted time collecting the last flag, saving every citizen and so on. I started the second game and almost immediately felt burnt out.
DelirusRex: I am a completionist, I just need to get everything in every game, period. This includes every achievement, item, collectible, and everything. The thing is, sometimes, these games have the greatest psychological achievement.
Stanley’s Fables has the strangest and best achievements in any game, and now I am about a week away from the “going out” achievement. Don’t play for five years.
sward: I once let one of my Sims be killed by lightning because he needs to stay outside to fish because I need an avocado seed.
I¡¯ll bother you: to be honest, I think any game that requires multiple passes to achieve an achievement is considered ¡°ridiculous length¡±. According to this definition, I¡¯ve done this more than a few times. The achievement I spent the most time getting may be 100 mounts in World of Warcraft. Many of them need crazy training or luck.
Zloth: X3: HUB task in Terran Conflict. No cheating, only a little bit far away from the keyboard SETA, almost no pirated other ships. In the beginning, it was to help rebuild a huge space station acquisition mission, but before long, there was too much demand to simply go out and buy, so you have to start building your own space station. And the station supplies these stations. You need to manage a trading fleet to transport goods and sell leftovers. Of course, you will want some defense against all these things. In short, you need to build an interstellar trade empire to complete the task! This is the biggest task I have ever seen.
I have not achieved anything for this. Back in the early days of the game, I got a few mods to add some features to the game. These modules were later signed (or something similar), so they won’t prevent achievements, but my game has been marked as modified. So I made a video.
Rensje: I’m not sure if this is “absurd length”, but one of the hardest and most time-consuming achievements I have achieved is the knight honor achievement in “Dark Souls: Ready to Die”. It requires you to collect all the unique weapons and shields available in the game with one character. This includes boss weapons that you can only obtain by trading specific boss souls, and items locked behind specific contracts. I spent hours farming and playing the game with the same character three times to collect all of them. One of the boss souls, the soul of Schiff, the wolf, needs two different swords and a shield! This means that you must defeat New Game+ and defeat him on NG+2 before collecting all weapons, and then you must also play Anor Londo during that game cycle before you can truly convert your soul into the desired weapon or shield. I actually remember that I finally got there, and before the achievement appeared, I excitedly collected the last weapon I needed. Excited, accidentally bought the wrong weapon! After realizing my mistake, I panicked. I think after I have worked hard to get here for more than 60 hours, I have to play the full game again to get it. I quickly quit the game by Alt+F4, halle-flippin’-lujah, the game has not been automatically saved. I was standing outside the door of Jarno Londo Cathedral, with the boss’s soul still in hand. This time I changed the appropriate weapon, and the achievement finally exploded! Wow! I continue to collect all the achievements of “Dark Souls”, I am proud of my achievements, but so far, the knight honor is the hardest part.
McStabStab: In this case, the absurd length I went to was caused by myself, but I cleared Crazy Max 100%…The whole game did not use fast travel. I am also proud to defeat Alien: Isolation on Nightmare difficulty and provide perfect games (100% achievement) for Hotline Miami, Into the Breach and a few other games.
Julez: I know this is a bit beyond the scope of the question, but I recently got the “collector” achievement in Evoland 2. The game has a card battle mini game, each player you defeat will get a unique card (you will also find some in the chest in the hidden area). I spent a few hours finding each opponent and fighting them, collecting all 62 cards. I have never been an achievement hunter, but I am obsessed with mini games, what can I say?
John Way: I want to get all the achievements of the Destruction Duke almost forever. This game is terrible, and it’s crazy to experience it again to finish it. Part of the problem is that I got the collector’s edition. If I don’t lack it, I think it would be a waste. DNF is a painful reminder why I should not pre-order any games. With the exception of Cyberpunk 2077, there may be an exception.
