Weir Minerals’ Cavex® Classified Cyclones add value to two other African mines; one is a gold mining operation and the other is a fluorite mine.
One of Ghana’s lowest cost surface gold mines has reported a nearly 70% improvement in sorting efficiency after Weir Minerals Africa retrofitted two Cavex® 700CVX13 hydrocyclones.
The unit’s liner wear life was also increased by 50% compared to competitor cyclones, and the faucet wear life was increased by 33%.The mine turned to Weir Minerals Africa after experiencing low recovery, with large deposits of coarse gold in storage tanks.
The mine needed a solution capable of reaching a P80 cut point of 120 microns or finer, while the existing hydrocyclone only achieved 53% through 106 microns. After analyzing the situation and performing simulations, the Weir Minerals Africa team recommended two Cavex® 700CVX13 hydrocyclones for installation into the mine’s existing infrastructure. These units are the first of this model to be installed in Africa.
A series of vortex detectors and taps connected to the hydrocyclones further optimise their performance.Test results six months later confirmed that they achieved 85.5% passing 106 microns in the overflow, compared to 50.5% at the previous mine.Due to the increased total cost of ownership (TOC) of the Cavex® 700CVX13 hydrocyclones, the mine intends to use these units to revamp the balance of the cluster.
In another success story – this time in South Africa – Cavex® hydrocyclones have improved separation efficiency and provided a leading fluorspar producer in Limpopo with a finer overflow product. The existing flat-bottom competitor cyclone in the mine’s secondary mill circuit was found to be inappropriately sized and the overflow is being coarser milled for downstream processing.
The Weir Minerals Africa team identified the Cavex® 400CVX10 hydrocyclone as the best equipment for the application. These hydrocyclones not only improve sorting and separation efficiency, but also improve overall wear life due to reduced turbulence at the 360-degree laminar helical inlet.
The Cavex® hydrocyclone cluster achieves higher separation efficiency by reaching the desired 90 micron P90 cut point to reduce coarse particle flow to overflow. The result was that the mine increased its mass recovery feed to the flotation loop by 4.9%.
The mine was so pleased with the Cavex® hydrocyclone performance that it ordered another four-way Cavex® 400CVX10 cluster for its new plant. It also ordered four Cavex® 250CVX10PU tailings cyclones to replace an existing competitor’s product, as well as another for the product dewatering stream loop.
