A few weeks ago, I participated in the rejuvenated outdoor retailer trade show, and it was great to see a bunch of exciting products coming soon. However, one category where I haven’t encountered a lot of new things is knives.
At multiple booths, I was told that due to various shortages, the brand is very focused on meeting the needs of the blades they have produced. What I collect means that business is good, even if innovation slows down.
Even so, I am happy to report that the well is far from dry. This month will still bring many eye-catching versions in the tool and EDC categories, the following highlights.
Created to celebrate 35 years of knife design and innovation of the Studies and Observations Group, this fierce folder uses the brand’s new smart XR lock, plus a carbon fiber lining titanium handle and a CTS-XHP steel Tiger pattern camouflage etched blade. Limited edition (only 350 pieces produced) has been serialized, and comes with a hard case and a commemorative coin.
We have been fans of the original Carter since its release last winter. This oversized version costs only $20 and has a VG-10 steel blade (known for its corrosion resistance and edge retention), which is half an inch (3.3 inches) longer and can handle larger jobs. Like its predecessor, Carter XL also has a machined G10 handle scale, a reversible deep carrying clip and a smart sliding lock.
This compact fin is a collaboration between Urban EDC and Jesper Voxnaes, and has the iconic combination of form and function from the acclaimed Danish designer. This 5.46-inch knife is equipped with a small and powerful 2.26-inch M390 steel blade. The blade is wide and can be cut in various ways, plus a brown or green Micarta, pure titanium or black PVD titanium contoured handle.
The blunt blade is frustrating and even dangerously buzzing. This knife avoids this problem with three 3.5-inch 3CR13 stainless steel drop blades-two thin blades and a saw-which can be easily replaced when they lose their edges. The lined fiberglass-filled nylon handle is lockable for security, and you can also purchase five packs of additional blades for $24.99.
This flipper has an industrial-looking stainless steel hollow handle, a 3.12-inch Nitro-V blade and a convenient pocket clip. It is available in stone-washed and black stone-washed finishes. It weighs 2.8 ounces, has caged ceramic ball bearings and frame locks. We can only assume that the flipping action is almost perfect.
This non-locking sliding knife itself is not new, but its handle is indeed: it is made of a special woven mixture of durable fibers and has a striking digital camouflage appearance. Two Tru-Sharp stainless steel blades, a thick-backed Wharncliffe and a fountain pen (originally designed to sharpen the turkey quill used in ink pens) can handle a large number of daily tasks.
Our friends in Oregon have been studying this very popular knife over and over again. There are currently 13 varieties. The latest model wraps the 3.24-inch drop insert in a milled 6061-T6 aviation aluminum handle, and is equipped with red thumb nails and barrel gaskets. The Austrian-made M390 super high-quality steel blade is known for its edge retention, ensuring this Bugout will add luster to your pocket in the next few years.
This entry-level multifunction tool is essentially a leaner and more affordable version of Wave+ for $99.95. It contains 15 functions (18 functions of Wave+), including a 420HC knife that can be operated with one hand, spring scissors, and a medium-sized screwdriver (can be replaced with 21 double-ended cutter heads through a $24 bit kit) , Two pliers (normal and pointed mouth) and two corkscrews (bottle and jar).
This higher level belt bag is one of five new adventure-ready premium series versions-three new backpacks and a suitcase-all waterproof, fully functional and can be stored in the included bag. The waist bag weighs only 5 ounces and has an astonishing 2 liters of space, thanks to a roll-top closure, a convenient front pocket and two carrying options: waist or crossbody as a sling.
Can a portable cocktail shaker be used as an EDC? In these worrying times, hell is yes. This 20-ounce stainless steel container integrates a clever coupling filter for preparing your adult beverage, and vacuum insulation ensures that it stays cool for hours on the go. More beer fans? Its size can also hold 16 ounces of tall boys, with a leak-proof cap and wide mouth opening for easy drinking.
