St. Pio of Pietrelcina, affectionately known as Padre Pio, is one of Italy’s most famous saints.

For a time, Father Pio was forbidden to listen to confession, hold public masses, and communicate with his spiritual children. This caused him great pain. Later, the order was lifted by the pope himself.
Although his life is full of extraordinary elegance and miracles, Padre Pio believes that his greatest work is a hospital built entirely through donations. Padre Pio was named Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza (House of Relief), and he worked tirelessly to help patients.
Padre died on September 23, 1968, a day he predicted, and all of Italy is mourning his death.
