Rashford-Nearly 100 people gathered at Lake Rashford Dam on Friday night to commemorate one of them.
When their old friend and dam expert Robert Pomeroy died unexpectedly two years ago, the Lake Rashford community was shocked.
“We knew immediately what we wanted to do for Bobby, we just didn’t know what it was,” said Darryl Stevenson, the commissioner responsible for overseeing the Lake Rashford Recreation Area. For more than 30 years, Pomeroy has been taking care of the dam, which has made the lake possible.
“What” turned out to be a scenic platform overlooking the dam and lake. On Friday night, the platform is exclusively open to the public, hoping that it can be enjoyed by people in the next few years. Further improvements are in the planning stage.
The Robert Pomeroy Memorial Overlook was funded and built by the Rashford community. The deck designed and built by Stevenson bears a metal hollow plaque to commemorate Pomeroy.
Pomeroy, who has served as the chief operator of the dam for more than 30 years, passed away on Labor Day in 2019. Stevenson said that he is a member of the famous Rashford family and is loved by many people.
The memorial viewing platform was voluntarily conceived, designed and constructed by the commissioners and staff of the Lake District. Fundraising to build the deck was led by Odella Becker and other volunteers.
Pomeroy is called the “Dam Whisperer” by his supporters. Before him, there was only one dam operator who had been in office about two years before Pomeroy took over.
The dam controls the amount of water in the lake, and in turn, the dam operator controls the valves and structures of the dam. The dam was built by Rochester Gas and Electric in 1927 to control the water level of the Genesee River. In 1981, the management of the dam and lake was transferred to the Lake Rashford Recreation Area. Soon after, Pomeroy became the chief dam operator.
“This 92-year-old dam is more noticeable than what you see from a boat on the lake,” Stevenson said. ¡°Very few people can clearly see behind the dam. In recent years, safety fences have restricted the line of sight. We want to create a way for people to appreciate the full view of the dam.¡±
The dam built on Canedea Creek controls approximately 8.25 billion gallons of water. It is 125 feet high and 625 feet wide. The water level is controlled by two hydraulically operated valves almost every day. The valve controls the amount of water discharged into the Genesee River, which in turn affects the Morris Mountain Dam and the city of Rochester.
In the second phase of the dam project, one of the two large valves replaced by RLRD at the end of the fall of 2018 will be displayed on the concrete pad. The lake and dam signs will also be refurbished.
At the ceremony, RLRD Commissioner Bob Panter was one of the speakers. Speaking of Pomeroy, he said: “Bobby ran the dam. There is not much he doesn’t know. I didn’t tell him what to do. I just told him what I wanted to do and he was done. When Bobby was at work At times, dams and lakes are always properly handled.”
The new chief dam operator is Alfred Reynolds, Pomeroy’s nephew, assisted by Pomeroy’s son Jerry.
