Experts say AstraZeneca’s blood clot risk is similar to the chance of being struck by lightning

MONTREAL-The chief physician of the McGill University Health Center said on Wednesday that the risk of severe blood clots from the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine is similar to the risk of being struck by lightning.
Dr. Marc Rodger provided a comparison after news on Tuesday that a 54-year-old Quebec woman died of a blood clot formed after vaccination on April 23.
Roger said that the death of Francine Boyer was “absolutely tragic,” but people who were not vaccinated had a risk of contracting COVID-19 several times higher than those who were vaccinated.
“The risk seems to be in the range of one in 100,000,” he said in an interview about blood clots. “In context, this is similar to the risk of being struck by lightning at some point in your life.”
Roger said that nearly 11,000 Quebecers died from COVID-19, and Boyer’s death is believed to be the first possible vaccine-related death in Canada. He added that the virus can also cause more blood clots than vaccines.
In a statement released late Tuesday, Boyer’s family described how her health declined after she and her husband received the AstraZeneca vaccine on April 9. In the next few days, she started to feel headaches and severe fatigue, the family said.
Boyer went to a hospital before transferring to the Montreal Institute of Neurology, because her condition deteriorated and she died of cerebral thrombosis. Her husband had no side effects.
An online obituary stated that Boyer was originally from Saint-Rémy, south of Montreal, Quebec, as a mother and grandmother.
Her family urged anyone with side effects from the vaccine to use the province’s telephone helpline to seek medical advice.
“Ms. Boyer’s family hopes to encourage vaccinated people to be alert to symptoms or abnormal reactions. If you have any questions, please contact Info-Santé (811),” the statement read.
Roger said that it is normal for the vaccinated person to feel unwell afterwards and have symptoms such as fever and headache. He said that those do not need to go to the emergency room.
Rodger explained that the symptoms of rare blood clots are different: they occur later-between 4 and 20 days after the injection-and are more dramatic.
He said that signs of blood clots in the brain include severe headaches, changes in vision, speech impairment, or loss of function of an arm or leg. Chest pain or shortness of breath may be a sign of a pulmonary embolism, and severe pain and swelling may indicate a blood clot.
Although there is evidence that the AstraZeneca vaccine may cause blood clots in rare cases, Health Canada believes that the AstraZeneca vaccine is safe and effective, so it has been approved for use in people 18 years of age and older. A national advisory group suggested that if they don’t want to wait for a different vaccine, they can provide vaccines to people 30 years and older.
Quebec is vaccinating people between the ages of 45 and 79, and the director of public health of the province said on Tuesday that it will continue to implement the strategy.
Roger said that experts do not yet fully understand which people are most susceptible to blood clots, although women seem to be more likely to get blood clots than men. He said he still believes that refusal to vaccinate is a riskier proposal for the age group eligible for vaccination.
“We are worried about this complication, but the other side of not being vaccinated is that the risk of complications is much higher,” he said.
Montreal officials said on Wednesday that there are still doses of AstraZeneca available to people 45 and older who want to make an appointment.
The city’s director of public health, Mylène Drouin, said that the vaccine is provided under the principle of “informed consent”, which means that registered persons will be aware of the potential risks.
She said: “I think (in terms of) benefits and risks, vaccination still has more benefits, but everyone must reflect appropriately.”
At the same time, the province reported 1,094 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, and another 12 deaths from the new coronavirus, of which 3 occurred within the past 24 hours. The number of hospitalizations decreased by 24 to 643, and the number of intensive care patients decreased by 9 to 161.
The vaccine program has been expanded to include pregnant women, who are eligible to make appointments on Wednesday.
Later that day, the Quebec Public Health Director stated that the government was studying the possibility of vaccinating children between 12 and 16 years old in the summer. Dr. Horacio Arruda said at a meeting of the provincial legislature that he is paying attention to ongoing research involving Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, and said that if people under the age of 16 are allowed to be vaccinated, the province may act quickly.

Ottawa-A forensic report found that Iran did not plan ahead of time for the fatal shooting down of a passenger plane last year, but a series of mistakes by the regime’s civil and military authorities laid the foundation for the PS752 to be shot down a few minutes after takeoff. The report was released on Thursday after eight months of investigation, saying that Iran failed to ensure its air safety or notify airlines of its military activities when it launched a missile attack on two US bases on the Iraqi border.
