Fritz’s sprinkler system?Tips and tricks for what to fix and when to call

Summer is coming, troubles with outdoor sprinkler system? Here are seven tips and tricks for fixing it yourself and when to call a professional.
The first clue to any sprinkler system problem is usually poor sprinkler head performance.Maybe it doesn’t raise or lower, sprays unevenly, or doesn’t spray the correct lawn areas.Follow a few quick steps to evaluate and adjust these faulty sprinklers.
If your sprinkler is damaged or not working properly, it’s time to replace it.Try purchasing another sprinkler of the same make and model to make sure it fits your sprinkler setup exactly.Dig a hole around the faulty sprinkler to find the riser that connects to the irrigation line. Then just unscrew the damaged nozzle from the connector and screw on the new one. Finally, turn the water back on and test the area to make sure your new sprinkler is working properly.
The valve opens and closes to control the amount of water flowing to the sprinkler, and the return valve is the valve that prevents water from flowing back into the main line.Make sure your system is getting enough water, not too much, by slowly turning the water valves on the return all the way – open them slowly so you don’t let the water flush into the pipes all at once.
When your sprinkler system is divided into zones, each zone has valves.Damaged or leaking valves can cause water to build up around the sprinklers in the area. You should be able to replace old, damaged and leaking area valves by cutting out the old valves and replacing them with the same model.(Note that standing water from a leaking valve is not the same as briefly standing around a sprinkler head low in the yard. Low head drainage is normal and can be resolved with a special sprinkler head that is higher than normal.)
Locate leaks by searching for soaked areas of your lawn.Use a shovel to reach into the area to expose the irrigation pipes. If you come across broken or damaged pipe, you can use a PVC cutting tool to cut off that section of pipe and replace it with new pipe.PVC primer and PVC cement are available at your local hardware store to connect new pipe sections to existing systems.
If only one area is not on, it may be time to call an electrician, as this could mean the voltage is too low. However, it can also be caused by a faulty solenoid.Replacing a faulty solenoid is as simple as turning off the controller, disconnecting the wires, and unscrewing the old solenoid. Then screw in the new solenoid and reconnect the wires.
Find out if your controller isn’t working at all, or if it’s not turning on certain areas at all.If it doesn’t open multiple areas or doesn’t work at all, you may need to replace the transformer.
You, the homeowner, can fix many common sprinkler problems quickly and easily. These tips should give you the confidence to figure out what needs adjustment or repair and what needs professional help.
