New Jersey U.S. Water won the Outstanding Engineering Award

Camden, NJ-(Business Wire)-New Jersey American Water Company will receive the Outstanding Engineering Award from the New Jersey Action Coalition. The award will be presented to the company at the 7th Outstanding Engineering Award Breakfast and Award Ceremony to be held at the Forsgate Country Club in Monroe, New Jersey on Tuesday, October 15, 2019.
The award-winning project is an innovative power transmission main restoration project in South Plainfield, New Jersey, which was completed this year by American Water Corporation of New Jersey. The project involved the use of carbon fiber to repair approximately 3,400 linear feet of 60-foot prestressed concrete pressure pipe (PCCP) water delivery mains, making it one of the largest projects of its kind in the United States. It also includes rebuilding existing manholes and valve pits, as well as installing new 48-inch butterfly valves and two new 60-inch by 24-inch T-shaped tees as access points. With the help of Mott MacDonald Co., the project will be completed by Montana Construction Inc. and Schilke Construction Co. Inc.
“We chose to use carbon fiber because of its unique characteristics,” explains Michael Wolan, engineering manager of American Water Corporation of New Jersey. “Carbon fiber is a fully structured system that does not significantly reduce the diameter of the internal pipe. It maintains the overall hydraulic capacity of the pipe while still being independent of the main pipe. Moreover, the ability of carbon fiber to withstand bending will make it only It can be installed from two small access points to minimize interference with surrounding land.”
The transmission main is located in South Plainfield, New Jersey, which is the center of the company’s central operating area and is the main infrastructure that serves more than 984,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers.
The Outstanding Engineering Award recognizes innovative, unique and outstanding engineering projects in the fields of transportation, energy, waste and rain, technology, construction and the environment that have an impact on the country’s economy and environment.
