After the Speaker of the New York State Assembly stated that the House of Representatives will not continue the impeachment proceedings, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo does not seem to add “impeached” to his estate.
Carl Heastie said on Friday, August 13th that the impeachment process would be cancelled because legal counsel stated that the state constitution does not authorize the legislature to impeach and remove elected officials who are no longer in office. Cuomo is still in office until August 24, but the Democratic-led parliament does not seem ready to impeach the Democrat at high speed before he steps down.
Cuomo announced his imminent resignation on Tuesday, August 10. A few days ago he faced increasing pressure to resign or the resignation of the Democratic-controlled legislature.
A week ago, the state attorney general issued an independent investigation and found that Cuomo had sexually harassed at least 11 women.
Heastie’s decision to abandon the impeachment process was particularly inconsistent with Republicans, many of whom expressed their desire to impeach the three-term governor so that he would not be able to seek political office in New York in the future.
The Associated Press reported that a woman who accused New York Governor Andrew Cuomo of misconduct expressed her opinion to those who criticized state legislators for not advancing impeachment proceedings.
In a tweet on August 15, Charlotte Bennett stated that the decision of Speaker Carl Heastie to end the investigation sent a message that sexual harassment is acceptable.
In February of this year, Bennett said that Cuomo asked her inappropriate questions about her sex life, including whether she had ever had sex with an older man.
