Avoid these shampoos recalled for cancer risk

If you or your family use dry shampoo or conditioner, you may want to check the brand just to be safe.
Consumer goods company Procter & Gamble has voluntarily recalled 32 dry shampoo and conditioner products after detecting some of these known carcinogens, benzene, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Some of the company’s best-known brands of aerosol dry shampoo and conditioner will be discontinued due to the presence of benzene.Brands like Old Spice, Pantene and Herbal Essences to name a few.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, exposure to benzene can occur by inhalation, oral intake, and through the skin, and can lead to cancer, including leukemia and bone marrow blood cancers and potentially life-threatening blood disorders.
Fortunately, at least so far, P&G says it has not received any reports of negative impacts from the recalled products, and is issuing the recall out of an abundance of caution.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that benzene is a sweet, flammable liquid chemical. You may recall that about a month ago, Procter & Gamble issued a similar recall of 18 of its Old Spice and Secret brands of antiperspirant products due to benzene contamination.
Likewise, the recalled products include products from the Pantene, Herbal Essences, Old Spice, Hair Food, Aussie and Waterless brands. For a complete and detailed list, click here.
Keep in mind that other products such as liquid shampoos or conditioners, hair sprays and styling products are not part of the recall.Procter & Gamble said in a media statement:
While benzene is not an ingredient in any of our products, our review indicates that unexpected levels of benzene come from the propellant that sprays the product out of the can.We detected benzene in aerosol dry shampoo spray products and aerosol dry conditioner spray products.Nothing is more important to us than the safety of consumers who use our products and the quality of the products we ship.
Check the checklist and make sure you are safe. You can also find reimbursement information here.Consumers should stop using and properly discard affected aerosol dry conditioner spray products and aerosol dry shampoo spray products, the FDA said.
