GEA's new aseptic double seat valve can extend the shelf life of dairy products

The double-seat valve is designed with a sterile leakage chamber, which is sealed to the atmosphere through valves on both sides. As with the entire aseptic D-tec series, GEA stated that the sealing properties of the new stem diaphragm extend the shelf life of milk and lactic acid fermentation products, as well as soft drinks and juices.
The company added that if manufacturers adjust their process chain, D-tec can help them achieve the required shelf life with fewer preservatives.
GEA Aseptic Valve Technology Product Manager Pascal Bär said: “It is usually the decisive standard for our customers to equip the interface of the processing plant with as few valve types as possible. When different types of valves must work together, spare parts handling and warehousing become more and more important. It’s getting more complicated.”
GEA stated that it can now use D-tec to consistently plan greenfield projects; existing systems can be retrofitted to single-seat valves.
With the D-tec dual chamber valve, GEA now offers aseptic valves suitable for “sterile” and “ultra-clean” sanitary grades.
“Our metal bellows technology, Aseptomag, is the benchmark for sanitary processing, and we use it for highly sensitive products such as baby food and UHT milk because they require uncompromising aseptic handling of processes and components,” Bär said.
“However, the various beverages produced by our customers are not promoted under aseptic conditions. In fact, according to the VDMA guidelines, they belong to the second highest hygiene level, namely the hygiene level IV’UltraClean’. This is why our new D -tec D/DV can meet the process requirements of this hygienic level.”
D-tec is suitable for iced tea, fruit juice, fruit yogurt and ESL milk, as well as products that require extended shelf life based on pH, cold chain and storage conditions.
The sealed D-tec stem diaphragm provides better protection from contamination and ensures the microbiological stability of the product throughout the manufacturing process. The membrane is made of a thermoplastic that is more flexible than stainless steel. For example, this makes them very suitable for compensating for pressure fluctuations, Bär says.
He added that, to some extent, they are easier to handle errors. In the event of a diaphragm rupture, the leak detection system ensures a high degree of operational safety.
“Our product development aims to ensure equipment availability and profitability for beverage and food manufacturers. The new dual chamber valve achieves this: it can be used very flexibly and combines a high level of hygiene with controllable operating costs. ”
The D/DV dual chamber valve is based on the VARIVENT assembly unit, and the valve can be configured according to the required process conditions. The double seat valve is characterized by two membranes, which can seal the inside of the product from the atmosphere. Its valve size ranges from DN 40 to DN 80 and OD 1.5″ to OD 3″.
Valves of size DN 100 and OD 4″ will be launched in the next few weeks. The valve seat can be used as a soft seal and a hard seal-the latter uses GEA’s recently launched TEFASEP gold seal. In addition, D-tec dual chamber valves can be equipped with One, two or three T.VIS control tops of different designs.
