St. Pio of Pietrelcina, affectionately known as Padre Pio, is one of Italy’s most recognizable saints.
He was born in 1887 to a poor family in Pietrellcina, a small Campania town near Benevento.His mother named him Francesco after St. Francis of Assisi.
As a child, Francesco wanted to be a priest, but his parents couldn’t afford his education.This was not uncommon in rural Italy at that time.His father lived on the land, and although they had not experienced poverty, they had no extra money to buy textbooks, etc.So his father went to the United States to find a job to cover Francisco’s academic requirements for entering seminary.
Francesco joined the Capuchin Franciscans and was given the religious name Pio (Pius) after the new clergy.
Once in order, Padre Pio begins to experience extraordinary elegance and paranormal phenomena.At the same time, he was often ill, which forced him to go home.Back in Pietrelcina, when he was 21 years old, he received the stigmata – the wound of Christ.It was the first time, although they didn’t stay.
When his health improved, he returned to the community near Benevento.However, his body remains weak and suffers from various ailments affecting his lungs.Finally, a monk suggested that he go to the mountain town of San Giovanni Rotondo, where the air might be good for his health.Once he arrives, Padre Pio knows he’ll be there for the rest of his life.It was 1916 and Padre Pio was 29 years old.
Once in San Giovanni Rotondo, the mysterious phenomenon began that would characterize his life.In 1918, he underwent what is known as Transverberation or cardiac puncture.People went to him to confess and said that Padre Pio could “read their souls” and that he knew their sins before he confessed.He often predicts and can predict the future.There have been stories of separation, where Padre Pio would be in two places at the same time.He also has the ability to heal.
The phenomenon he is best known for occurred on September 20, 1918.That day, Father Pio received the stigmata, the five wounds of Christ, which left visible marks on him for the rest of his life.While praying in front of the cross on the choir platform above the ancient church, he not only felt piercing pains in his hands, feet and sides, but also had visible open wounds.
His superiors ordered Padre Pio to take pictures of the wound and undergo a medical examination.The doctors who studied them concluded that the wounds were inexplicable because they did not heal or worsen over time.
When asked about all these phenomena, Padre Pio often replies that he does not understand them himself and is even a mystery to him.
Soon, Padre Pio’s reputation as a mystic and healer began to spread.People from all over the world began to travel to San Giovanni Rotondo in search of healing or miracles.Church authorities responded cautiously.
For a time, Padre Pio was prohibited from listening to confessions, holding Mass, and communicating with his spiritual children in public.This caused him great pain.Later, the Pope personally lifted the order.
Although his life was full of extraordinary graces and miracles, Father Pio believes that his greatest work was the hospital he built entirely through donations.Padre Pio, named Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza (House of Suffering), worked tirelessly to help the sick.
Padre died on September 23, 1968, the day he foretold and the whole of Italy mourned his death.
Despite many controversies in his life, Saint Pio of Pieterelcina was canonized on June 16, 2002 by Pope John Paul II, who dedicated himself to Padre Pio and placed his published letters in on his nightstand.
Millions of people visit the tomb of Padre Pio in San Giovanni Rotondo every year.The miracles and graces that people receive today through his intercession testify to the truth of what Father Pio used to say while he was alive: “After I die, I will have more voices. My true mission will be in Start after I die.”
