State Police look outside Endwell for possible station location

As Union Township officials push to use the Endwell building as a state police station, the agency said it would consider other locations for the facility.
The town notified state police Monday that it plans to end the lease within 60 days. The last date of the lease is April 18, the letter from a town attorney said.
In a statement, the state police acknowledged that “lease negotiations are ongoing, but will include other local municipalities to identify possible locations for the new station.”
The State Police has had an office on East Avenue in Endwell for over 45 years.A satellite station ran for decades at the old Hooper School before establishing a larger operation in what is now the town courthouse.
“We’re absolutely delighted that the State Police have been serving Union Township and we’re delighted where they are,” Town Supervisor Richard Materese said Wednesday.
Speaking on WNBF Radio’s Binghamton Now, Materese said: “We’re not trying to kick them out.” He said: “The intent of the letter is simple, ‘Hey, let’s talk about leases. “It’s possible that the legalese we’re using is a bit harsher than necessary,” he said.
The state police paid “a little rent” for the other substations, so Union Township is now seeking some compensation for the use of its buildings, Materese said.
If the state trooper does move out of its current location, Materese said, the town may consider moving its courtroom operations, now in Johnson City, into the building.
