Tesla’s U.S.-made Y-model obtains a biological weapon defense mode through a hospital-grade HEPA filter

Earlier this year, Tesla began to introduce Model Y made in China to local customers. Unlike the US-made all-electric crossover, the Model Y produced by the Shanghai Super Factory is equipped with a large HEPA filter and a dedicated biological weapon defense mode. Images shared by the Model Y recently produced at the Fremont plant show that the highly respected feature is now also being rolled out to Tesla’s American-made crossovers.
The electric vehicle group The Kilowatts shared the initial photos of the American-made Model Y with Bioweapon Defense Mode on Twitter. The Model Y in question is a long-range dual-motor variant, manufactured at the Fremont factory in July 2021. With this in mind, the California-made Model Y delivered this quarter seems likely to include a dedicated biological weapon defense mode function.
Suddenly: The new Tesla Model Y is making a biological weapon defense mode! This feature uses HEPA filters to provide hospital-grade air quality. It has been the standard for Model S/X for some time, but this is the first time we have seen it Y-type! @elonmusk pic.twitter.com/ZNWgo6fjje
It is surprising to add a biological weapon defense mode to the Model Y made in China, because Elon Musk has pointed out in the past that the large HEPA filter required for this feature is too large to be installed in the Model 3 without sacrificing everything-electric cars Trunk. Considering that Model 3 and Model Y are built on the same platform, it is generally expected that all-electric crossovers will not have enough space to accommodate hospital-grade HEPA filters.
However, there were signs at the end of last year that Model Y will eventually be equipped with a biological weapon defense mode, just like its larger and more expensive siblings Model X and Model S. These include Tesla’s software that mentions Model Y’s HEPA filter, as well as updates to the Model Y manual, which includes a biological weapon defense mode. When Tesla China officially launched Model Y with a dedicated biological weapon defense mode function, these observations were confirmed.
Looking at the HEPA filter of the Model Y made in China, you will find that this huge component is installed behind the trunk of an all-electric crossover. This will make it easier to replace the filter when needed, which is different from the Model X, which requires some disassembly when the HEPA filter needs to be replaced. Although an image of the HEPA filter in the Tesla Model Y recently manufactured at the Fremont plant has not been shared at the time of writing, it is very likely that the crossover made in the US will follow the same settings as its Shanghai-made Giga counterpart.
Biological weapon defense mode can be said to be one of Tesla’s most unique safety-centric features. A test involving Model X shows that this feature can thoroughly clean the air inside (or even outside) the vehicle. Over the years, this feature has been proven, especially in the case of Tesla Model S and Model X owners in California where air quality has been degraded due to wildfires. Adding a biological weapon defense mode to the Tesla Model Y can make the all-electric crossover more value for money because its price is closer to the entry-level Model 3, but its cabin air filtration system is similar to the more advanced Model S and Model X.
