Partners in Design: Alfred H. Barr Jr. and Philip Johnson explores how Alfred Barr, the Museum of Modern Art’s (MoMA) first director, and Philip Johnson, the curator of architecture, introduced modern design to North America. The exhibition’s story begins when Barr and Johnson traveled to Europe in the late 1920s and early 1930s and discovered that leading European architects—such as Le Corbusier, J. J. P. Oud, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe–were rejecting ornament in favor of a purity of form. Barr and Johnson dubbed this new architectural language “International Style.” Featuring more than 100 objects—including furniture, photographs, and industrial and graphic design—the exhibition traces the development of modern design from its origins at Bauhaus to Barr and Johnson’s radical experiments in their homes in New York City to MoMA’s nationally influential exhibition in the 1930s and beyond.

The New-York Historical Society will celebrate the creative legacy of New York through the lens of late photographer Editta Sherman in The Duchess of Carnegie Hall: Photographs by Editta Sherman, on view August 18 – October 15, 2017 in the recently opened Center for Women’s History. The exhibition highlights the career of the renowned female photographer, who was also Bill Cunningham’s friend and the subject of his Facades series, and features portraits of 65 notable film stars, authors, musicians, and athletes, including actress Kim Hunter, country music star June Carter Cash, and authors Betty Smith and Pearl Buck. As a female living in the male-dominated society of the 1940s through 1960s, Editta’s thriving career exemplifies a fiercely independent woman’s drive for success.

Aubrey Johnson is a vocalist and composer whose style is rooted in jazz, Brazilian, and creative contemporary music, with and without words. Since arriving in New York in 2011 she has been performing her original music and arrangements with her sextet, as well as doing considerable work as a side person in the jazz and classical scenes, and teaching at Queens College and Montclair State University. She is currently working on her debut album, which will be released on Greg Osby’s Inner Circle Music label in May 2018. Aubrey has been called a "formidable vocalist" and "adept improviser" by the Boston Globe and Downbeat magazine describes her voice as "ethereal" and "hauntingly intimate".
