The late Andy Fredericks once said: “Standpipe systems are like a big black hole. You put water in one end and hope that water will come out the other end.” That is the God’s honest truth when it comes to fire protection systems. Standpipes are one of the most misunderstood aspects in firefighting for most of the fire service. Unless you work in New York City, Chicago, or other major metropolitan cities that fight fire in high-rise or standpipe-equipped buildings on a regular basis, chances are you know little about these systems. These systems are complex: Anything that can go wrong most likely will go wrong.

Air injection is considered the most reliable method of water hammer protection against transient vacuums. The air will raise the pipe pressure as high as the outside pressure, thus stopping the vaporization process. Afterward, the trapped air pocket will act like a spring to cushion and prevent a violent collision between two separated water columns trying to rejoin. After the transient conditions are over, the injected air can be safely vented.

In this picture, with the lander on the left, you can again see the path the astronauts took as they walked around on the Moon. If you follow it to the right, it splits as they walked around a small crater on their way to and from Surveyor 3. It’s not obvious in the transcripts of the astronauts’ conversation (either walking to or heading back from the crater) but it looks to me that when they walked to the Surveyor site, they went one way around that small (6 meter/20 foot) pit, and when they came back they went around the other way.

To deny this magnificence when you actually have more evidence that it was real than that Columbus’ voyage was real or the Wright Brothers’ flight was real or, for that matter, that the Boston Tea Party was real requires a very small soul, in my opinion; one that does not understand the wonder involved.
