Beaux-Arts Court, 3rd Floor Witness the New York premiere of Corbeaux (Crows), a new dance performance by Moroccan choreographer Bouchra Ouizguen, as part of the Crossing the Line Festival, a citywide arts festival that brings international artists and New York City audiences together in discovery and dialogue. Corbeaux (Crows) is a hypnotic, site-specific living sculpture that interrupts and transforms public spaces. Dark silhouettes of women emerge from the shadows and silently fan out across the Beaux-Arts Court. Forming alchemical arrangements, they move again and again, erupting into an immersive chorus of piercing sounds and rhythmic cries, making all notions of time and space disappear. Corbeaux (Crows) is presented by the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF)’s 2017 Crossing the Line Festival in partnership with Abrons Arts Center, Movement Research, and the Brooklyn Museum. Martinis & Murder is a weekly true crime podcast hosted by John Thrasher and Daryn Carp. The other Nature paper, led by David Thornalley of University College London, took a much longer-term look at changes in the AMOC. They studied deep-sea sediment to gather hints at the current’s makeup over time. They found that the AMOC was actually relatively stable from the year 400 AD until about 1850. This period coincides with the so-called Little Ice Age. The authors say that glaciers from the Little Ice Age started melting largely due to natural climate variability at the start of the Industrial Era, and that’s what began feeding freshwater to the North Atlantic.

This opera by composer John Musto is based on the real-life experiences of Rhoda Knight Kalt and her grandfather Charles R. Knight, the famous naturalist illustrator whose paintings and sculptures are still on display at the Museum today. About the Opera Co-commissioned and co-produced with Lyric Opera of Chicago’s Lyric Unlimited and Pittsburgh Opera, Rhoda and the Fossil Hunt is based on the real-life experiences of 8-year-old Rhoda Knight Kalt and her trips to the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) with her grandfather Charles R. Knight, the famous naturalist artist who was commissioned to create paintings and sculptures of prehistoric creatures – many still on display at the AMNH today. The opera premieres in the AMNH’s Hall of Saurischian Dinosaurs in the fall 2017 before traveling to Chicago (Lyric Unlimited) and Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh Opera).
