And yet, the deniers will still deny. It’s a matter of faith for them, and like all matters of faith the conclusion is decided on first. Any and all evidence must fit that conclusion, for the conclusion is fixed. If the evidence denies the conclusion, then somehow, the evidence is wrong – either faked or tainted. Which is why a simple oddball doubt like “it seems incredible that they could actuially do that back then… did they really?” turns into “Aliens, together with the CIA, the KGB, the FBI, MI6 and UNATCO, working with the Illuminati and Majestic 12, secretly faked this at Area 51 using technology far beyond that which we believe existed at the time… er….” If either tens of thousands of people are part of this grand conspiracy or the scientists and engineers really did build a rocket they believed could go to the moon, then tens of thousands of loyal conspiracy members are keeping their mouths shut to the grave. Many, many thousands saw the rockets launch with their own eyes, so either those rockets went to the moon, we just decided not to put astronauts in them, or all those witnesses are part of the conspiracy, or some sort of super-high tech mind altering gas was spread around the area to give everyone the same neural nanite-programmed illusions. There has to be *some* point to the conspiracy still existing, so if it’s not to fool the Soviet Union – like they didn’t have radio dishes pointed at the moon looking at the astronauts’ broadcasts back – then it must be for some other reason, like protecting secret aliens. After all, they *know* beyond doubt that it was a fake, so anything, no matter how incredible, must be true instead.
A transient (that is, short time and temporary) vacuum can form during transitions between operating modes. When a pipe’s steady flow is interrupted by a rapidly closing valve, the pressure decreases on the downstream side (a down-surge), and builds on the upstream side (an up-surge). This generates a negative pressure pulse (shock wave), which travels downstream, and a positive pulse, which travels upstream. These pressure pulses travel at sonic velocity, and will in turn transmit inverted reflections back toward the valve whenever they reach a flow splitter (branch connection) or a flow area change.

The test isn’t has there been one before. We know buyers’ clubs in general work. We know the Pigouvian Principle in general works. It’s just a matter of finding the formula to put Pigou’s peanut butter in buyers’ club chocolate.

Art Garfunkel will publish his new memoir, What Is It All But Luminous: Notes From an Underground Man, this fall. Join him as he speaks to music writer and journalist Anthony DeCurtis about his life and work before, during and after Simon & Garfunkel … about their folk-rock music in the roiling age that embraced and was defined by their pathbreaking sound. He writes about growing up in the 1940s and ’50s (son of a traveling salesman), a middle class Jewish boy, living in a red brick semi-attached house in Kew Gardens, Queens, a kid who was different — from the age of five feeling his vocal cords "vibrating with the love of sound" … meeting Paul Simon in school, the funny guy who made Art laugh; their going on to junior high school together, of being twelve at the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, both of them "captured" by it; going to a recording studio in Manhattan to make a demo of their song, "Hey Schoolgirl" (for $7!) and the actual record (with Paul’s father on bass) going to #40 on the national charts, selling 150,000 copies … Hear about their becoming Simon & Garfunkel, taking the world by storm, ruling the pop charts from the time he was sixteen, about not being a natural performer, but more a thinker … touring; sex-for-thrills on the road, reading or walking to calm down (walking across two continents — the USA and Europe). About being an actor working with directors Nicolas Roeg (Bad Timing) and Mike Nichols ("the greatest of them all") … getting his masters in mathematics at Columbia; choosing music over a PhD; his slow unfolding split with Paul and its aftermath; learning to perform on his own, giving a thousand concerts worldwide, his voice going south (a stiffening of one vocal cord) and working to get it back … about being a husband, a father and much more.
This case represents a unique instance of iatrogenic (i.e., caused by medical examination or treatment) airway obstruction. It was the endotracheal tube we placed to correct her hypoxia and loss of protective airway reflexes that led to her airway compromise. And it represents an exception to the discussion of airway pressures above.
