The new 2021 Ford F-150 trucks have begun to arrive at dealerships, but some trucks have been delayed due to a shortage of parts supply. TFLtruck understands that the new F-150 maximum trailer towing kit includes a 9.75-inch 3/4 floating rear axle. The axle may delay the delivery of some new trucks equipped with the largest towing package. This is all the details.
This “3/4 floating” type rear axle provides the extra load capacity required by the new truck. Certain configurations of the new F-150 have a rated towing force of up to 14,000 pounds. You may have heard that we talk about half-ton trucks with “semi-floating” axles and HD trucks with “full-floating” axles. We have little exploration or research on the design of the “3/4 floating” rear axle, but this design is more similar to the setting of a heavy-duty full floating bridge.
The following figure (not created by TFLtruck, source unknown) shows the HD full-floating shaft design on the left and the “3/4 floating” shaft design on the right. The latter design is more compact and uses a single ball bearing. The larger, fully floating shaft design uses two ball bearings. It is good to know that those models designed to tow and tow heavier are equipped with different axle designs to support this capability.
Why not install a fully floating HD shaft on the rear of the new F-150? We have no official news about this, but the HD shaft design is cumbersome. For the “half-ton truck” application, this may be an overkill. Nonetheless, any truck rated at 14,000 pounds can and should be considered a heavy vehicle.

TFLtruck contacted Ford to confirm the largest design. Trailer towing packages, and potential shortages of parts related to axles. Ford confirmed the design of the axles and said: “We see that the demand for the largest trailer towing package is much higher than initially expected, which has led to the commodity problem of a shortage of floating 9.75 axles.”
F-150 trucks are not equipped with max. The trailer towing bag has different rear axles and adopts a semi-floating design.
Update 17/12/20: According to Ford’s configurator, the unique tow mirror is not part of the trailer trailer kit, but an additional option that requires you to specify the trailer trailer or the largest trailer trailer kit. We apologize for the mistake.
