Cracking the code may be an effective way to solve the variable valve timing problem, and the solution is usually engine oil.
If you find P0011 and P0021, camshaft position sensor “bank 1″ and camshaft position sensor “bank 2″ codes, you should check whether the VVT system is faulty and check the sensors.
Before turning the nuts and bolts, the first step you should take is to check the oil. Dirty oil and oil lacking regular oil changes will leave a buildup of sludge or debris in the passage to the oil control valve operating the VVT. If the oil is dirty and too much sludge has accumulated at the valve port, the sludge can be passed through the cam and valve assembly.
From there, the oil passages in the cam may be damaged and the cam may malfunction due to notched journals.
Another code P0521-oil pressure sensor / switch range / performance-can also indicate the quality of the oil. In some cases, this code can also indicate that the wrong type of oil was used. Lack of regular maintenance seems to be an important factor in most such systems.
Unlike yesterday’s vehicles that can usually ignore certain maintenance issues, newer engines and newer systems require special attention.
