Inferior spark plugs exceeding their service life can cause poor combustion. Fire, and usually poor performance Photo/Promise Twinamukye
The spark plug is a part of the engine, it generates sparks, ignites the air and fuel mixture in the engine cylinder, thereby generating the energy required for the operation of the car. A failed spark plug can affect the performance of your vehicle and is usually detrimental to your car.
“It is the thing that powers the engine”, “It helps the engine accelerate”, “I have heard mechanics talk about it, but never really bothered to understand its role”, “I actually didn’t know.”
These are some of my answers to this question. Many drivers may know what a spark plug looks like, but few people know what it actually does and how it works.
Spark plugs exist for as long as internal combustion engines and are often a misunderstood component.
Many times, we are told to ensure regular inspection and replacement of spark plugs to maintain fuel consumption.
When you have a perfectly functioning engine, it needs two things to keep it running, the right ratio of fuel and air, and the spark that ignites the mixture.
Simply put, the main function of the spark plug is to ignite the air/fuel mixture in the engine under any operating conditions. The secondary and little-known use of spark plugs is to remove heat from the combustion chamber.
The other end of the spark plug is left outside the engine, and it is connected to the spark plug wire of the old car and the coil assembly of the new car.
When the piston moves upward for the first time, it compresses the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber, the engine computer sends out a surge of energy, the spark plug ignites, and ignites the air-fuel mixture.
The explosion in the cavity again forces the piston down, causing the engine to turn further because the same process occurs for all other cylinders, one, two or three at a time, depending on the engine settings. When the piston rises for the second time, the exhaust valve opens and the burned gas is released into the exhaust pipe.
As you can see, the spark plug is a very important part of the engine. Therefore, in order to maintain the highest performance that the car can provide, attention should be paid to timely and appropriate regular maintenance.
Outdated and inferior spark plugs can cause poor combustion, misfires, and generally poor performance. How do you know if your plug needs to be replaced?
On average, spark plugs need to be replaced every 25,000 kilometers. Some special high-quality plugs can be used for up to 100,000 kilometers before being replaced. If you don’t know when the engine was last changed, or whether your engine was running roughly or recently fuel economy has declined, then this may mean that your engine may benefit from some fresh, clean sparks.
As for when to change, if your car is okay, there is no reason to change frequently or wait too long. Every 30,000 kilometers is a good benchmark for standard spark plugs, but remember that all engines have different requirements. Some newer cars never need ordinary drivers to think about spark plugs.
However, many mechanics replace the spark plug every time the car is repaired. This is not necessary, unless of course people always use cheaper low-quality plugs or other engine problems are ruining good plugs. Please remember that spark plugs are very sturdy parts and will not fail unless they work for a long time under severe conditions
The bottom line about spark plugs is that in order to reduce fuel costs and get better mileage, you should make sure that your car uses original (most brands have authorized dealers) spark plugs. There is no need to replace spark plugs for every maintenance, because they can be used for a long time.
Likewise, if necessary, the correct spark plugs are specifically designed for use with the engine they are screwed into. Although there are several universal plugs, it is best to get the plug recommended by the manufacturer.
There is a lot of information about this on the Internet, which shows equivalent products of different brands of the same engine (such as NGK, Denso, and Bosch).
There are some common signs that your car may be experiencing spark plug problems. If you start to notice that your vehicle is idling unevenly and starts to vibrate more than normal, this may indicate that you need to check the spark plugs.
Another sign that is usually associated with a spark plug failure is that your car may start to be more difficult to start.
Since a spark plug is a spark-generating component, it allows energy to be generated to make your vehicle run. If you encounter problems when starting your car, one possible cause may be spark plug wear.
Your engine may start to stall or take longer to start, which will start to drain your car’s battery life. If you have started to notice that your car takes longer to start, it may be wise to check it, because if you drain the battery too much, you may have to replace it too.
Finally, another common indicator of spark plug failure is increased vehicle fuel consumption.
When the air-fuel mixture is ignited, it creates a small explosion that generates energy to move the cylinder. If you have a problem with your spark plug, this process is not efficient and requires more fuel to generate the energy needed for the car to run.
You may notice a significant increase in fuel consumption, so it is wise to check immediately so that you don’t spend more money on fuel.
